K2 Base Camp Concordia Trek
K2 Base Camp and Concordia Trek give great views of four 8,000m peaks and are thought by many to be one of the best high mountain treks in the world. Some of the wildest and most dramatic landscapes on earth are found in the vast, rugged Karakoram Range situated in Northern Pakistan. Remote and spectacular, the icy peaks and vast Glaciers of the Karakoram offer unparalleled opportunities for adventurous trekking. The 62km long Baltoro Glacier is Pakistan’s number one trekking in karakoram destination. Seven of the world’s twenty-five highest peaks rise above this glacier, while the lower reaches are surrounded by some of the world’s highest granite walls and spires. The Baltoro Glacier meets the Vigne and Godwin-Austen glaciers at the huge natural amphitheater of Concordia. This is one of the most spectacular mountain campsites in the world. Our new itinerary combines all that is best in the Karakoram: a visit to K2 Base Camp and Concordia Trek, a challenging ascent of a high pass, and the chance to experience two very different valleys. This trek offers variety and excitement. It is an unforgettable mountain experience. The first few kilometres from Concordia is across difficult crevasses and glacial rivers. You will save time by hiring a guide who knows the way to lead you across the snow bridges. Follow a medial moraine north up the Godwin Austin Glacier, with magnificent views back to Chogolisa. As you approach K2 Base Camp and Concordia Trek and see the zebra-stripped glaciers sweeping round the corner and disappearing down the Baltoro. The easiest walking is on the ice, but due to constant movement of glaciers the trek keeps on changing from time to time. Stop for lunch at Broad Peak base camp at about 5000m. The memorials to those killed on K2 are about 20 minutes north of K2 Base Camp and Concordia Trek, on the rock face above the junction of Savoia and Godwin Austin glaciers. Walk to the foot of the rock, then scramble up about 30 vertical metres on a rocky path to the memorials, a collection of saucepan lids with the climbers' names and dates hammered onto them. Return by scrambling down the other side of the ridge to the Savoia Glacier.
